Health Minister Abiad explains current situation of COVID-19 in Lebanon

Minister of Health Firas Abiad said on Friday during an interview with Al-Sahem newspaper that “there are medicines in Lebanon worth USD 18-19 million, as three quarters of them are medicines for cancer and incurable diseases, and they are 100% subsidized.”

“We did not deprive people of medicine, but rather we said that we have this amount of money, and how it can be used to provide most of the people with medicine,” the Minister mentioned.

Regarding the current situation of hospitals in light of the new hit of COVID-19 as well as the fear of Omicron variant, he indicated that “95 percent of hospitals are full in some areas, such as in Akkar and Nabatiyeh, although in Baalbek region we have reached 84 percent.”

He also explained that “they are working with hospitals and preparing some procedures at the governorate level, which means that each governorate reaches a certain number of absorptive capacities, even if they are forced not to receive non-emergency cases such as plastic surgeries.”

On another note, Abiad pointed out that the decision to close the country “will be taken by the COVID-19,” adding that “for example if six classes were closed in school due to the virus, and 30 students were infected, will the parents send their children to school?”
