Defense Minister Slim after meeting Del Col: UNIFIL role must be respected

Major General Stefano Del Col, UNIFIL's Head of Mission and Force Commander, met with Minister of Defense Maurice Slim on Saturday and informed him that UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres had named Major General Aroldo Lazaro Sainz as his successor, who will take office in late February.

The meeting also dealt with the stability that prevails in the UNIFIL area of operations thanks to the cooperation with the army in the southern Litani sector.
Slim, for one, emphasized the importance of respecting UNIFIL's function and supporting its freedom of action in collaboration with the Lebanese army, all in accordance with applicable international resolutions.

He also stated that there should be no conflicts between the international military and the locals.

General Del Col also emphasized the importance of continuing to hold periodic tripartite meetings in the Naqoura region, emphasizing the excellent relationship that exists between UNIFIL and citizens in various towns, as well as the constructive cooperation that exists between UNIFIL and local administrations.

He also pointed out that the incidents that the UNIFIL patrols were subject to do not reflect any hostility from the part of the citizens in that area towards the International forces.
