EU to deploy Election Observation Mission for Lebanon’s legislative elections

At the invitation of the Lebanese Ministry of Interior and Municipalities, the European Union has decided to send an EU Election Observation Mission to observe the parliamentary elections scheduled for May 15, 2022.

The High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission Josep Borrell has appointed member of the European Parliament Giorgi Holvini as the mission's chief observer.

The European Union Election Observation Mission to Lebanon for 2022 will consist of different groups of observers.

The main team of election analysts, which will be based in Beirut, will arrive at the end of March and will consist of 10 electoral experts covering various aspects of the electoral process.

By mid-April, 30 long-term observers will join the mission, and will be deployed in the regions to follow up on the political campaign.

Thereafter, 40 short-term observers will join the mission on elections day to observe the polling, voting and counting processes. Some of these observers will cover voting operations abroad in a number of countries with significant numbers of Lebanese expats.

In line with the European Union's election observation methodology, the mission will hold a press conference in Beirut 48 hours after elections day to issue its preliminary statement of results. Once the entire electoral process is completed, the mission will publish a final report that includes a final assessment of the electoral process and a set of recommendations regarding reforms to improve future elections.
