Parliament fails to elect new president for 4th time
The Lebanese Parliament failed on Monday to elect a new president for the fourth time.
 
The first round ended with MP Michel Moawad receiving 39 votes, 50 MPs voted with a blank ballot, 10 MPs elected Issam Khalifeh. Meanwhile, 13 MPs voted for “The New Lebanon.” One of the MPs voted “For Lebanon,” and another MP wrote condolences over the situation on his ballot.
 
This as Speaker Nabih Berri said that the next election session will be scheduled later in a manner that does not coincide with the visit of US mediator Amos Hochstein to Lebanon.
 
Out of 128 MPs, only 110 attended the vote’s first round, while MPs Hassan Mrad, Houssien al-Hajj Hassan, Nadim Gemayel, Jihd al-Samad, Ziad Hawat, Elias al-Khoury and Toni Frangieh did not attend the session with an excuse. 
 
Following the session, MP Moawad said that he received today almost as many votes as he did in the previous session.
 
"There is a dominant authority working to blackmail MPs and the Lebanese to maintain its quotas by disrupting the second round of all election sessions," Moawad stressed.
 
For his part, MP Alain Aoun said that electing a president is done through ensuring consensus between all political powers.
 

MP Firas Hamdan said that he voted for Issam Khalifeh, while MP Waddah Sadek said that he voted for Mouawad.

“I’m a change MP who is outside the Change bloc,” Sadek added.

As for MP Hassan Fadlallah, he considered that the President of the Republic is the symbol of the nation's unity, and therefore the majority must agree on the election of a president.
