US condemns in strongest terms 'violent attack' on UNIFIL

The United States has condemned in the strongest terms the violent attack on UNIFIL peacekeepers on Wednesday that left one Irish servicemember dead and three wounded, according to a statement issued by the US embassy in Beirut.

The embassy added that violence against peacekeepers is unconscionable, puts Lebanese civilians at risk, and jeopardizes stability in southern Lebanon. 

"The United States sends its heartfelt condolences to the peacekeeper's family, friends, and colleagues who died and hopes for the speedy recovery of those wounded," the statement added.

The US called upon the Lebanese government to urgently investigate this attack, hold those responsible accountable, and prevent such attacks from occurring in the future.

"We continue to urge the Lebanese government to facilitate full cooperation with UNIFIL, including facilitating UNIFIL movements into and out of its area of operations, with or without accompanying Lebanese security services, in accordance with UNSCR 1701," the statement concluded.
