REPORT: In response to Rai’s caricature, posters mocking the Saudi king fly high in Lebanon

Satirical posters depicting Saudi King Abdullah as the king of spades, holding a sword stained with blood were removed by the Internal Security Forces on Tuesday from the areas of Jal el-Dib and Fanar.

These posters are considered as a response to a caricature published in the Saudi Al-Watan newspaper on Partiarch Bechara Rai following his trip to Syria to attend the inauguration ceremony of Greek Orthodox patriarch Youhanna X Yazigi on February 9 and 10.

General Prosecutor Judge Hatem Madi tasked the Central Criminal Investigations Bureau to carry out an investigation to find leads on those involved in erecting the posters.

Social media users shared the poster, and said that fliers were distributed to passer’s by.

Rai's caricature had replaced his miter with a rocket and highlighted the common letters between the patriarch and Syrian President Bashar Assad's names in Arabic.

In this context, Saudi Ambassador to Lebanon Ali Awadh Asiri praised the immediate action taken by General Prosecutor Judge Hatem Madi, who called on security apparatuses to launch investigation in an attempt to reveal the party responsible for the caricature.

Asiri expressed his surprise towards these actions, noting that they do not reflect the ethics of the Lebanese people, noting that the deep fraternal relations between the Lebanese and the Saudi people should not be affected by the activities of “those who seek to create strife”.
