Introduction to the evening news 18-10-2011

A historic prisoner swap between Israel and Hamas but the long awaited peace deal enters the fog of history and geography. In parallel to Hamas’ success in gaining indirect recognition, the impasse of President Mahmoud Abbas, following his initiative at the U.N. that won him Palestinian, Arab and international support, has been aggravated. In fact, Abbas took the biggest peaceful step but he was faced with a negative response from Israel and the U.S. The first wave of repercussions from this blowback has been the freezing of U.S. aid that helped maintain the Palestinian economy.

On the other hand, Hamas made progress in an issue that is very emotional for the Palestinians: the liberation of hundreds of Palestinian prisoners from Israeli jails. The question here is why would such a grand gift be offered to Hamas and put Abbas in such a difficult position?

What is the next step for a Palestinian Authority that is under such pressure to maintain internal cohesion?

In this regard, President Abbas unveiled an agreement with the former Israeli government headed by Olmert to release a new group of prisoners detained before the 1993 Oslo Agreement as if there were a race between the two major Palestinian parties to claim the prize of international and popular legitimacy.

In Lebanon, a storm is brewing over the repeated border violations by Syrian forces, and last week’s hubbub about the labor strike has resurfaced with the Syndical Coordination Body calling for yet another strike tomorrow.

The conundrum remains the same and no one is there to answer the questions of students and their parents.  School doors will be open tomorrow, but the teachers will not be present; so what will happen?
