Rome meeting: Rai to discuss hybrid law with Christian parties

Maronite Patriarch Cardinal Bechara Rai held on Monday a second meeting in Rome with Prime Minister Najib Mikati, Speaker Nabih Berri and Environment Minister Nazem Khoury to tackle the upcoming parliamentary elections.

LBCI sources said that discussions suggested a solution based on a hybrid electoral law which Patriarch Rai will propose to the concerned Christian parties.

Following the meeting, Mikati asserted that Patriarch Rai will hold contacts with Christian parties to propose their ideas over a hybrid electoral draft law, and called on Rai to propose “political void” as an option to Christian factions should electoral discussions fail.

In this context, sources said that Patriarch Rai carried out a series of calls on Sunday night to tackle the elections draft law, urging further progress in this regard.

A first meeting between the Speaker, the Prime Minister and the Maronite Patriarch was held on Sunday in the Italian capital city but yielded no breakthroughs for the deadlocked electoral law to govern elections in June.
