President Sleiman denounces "Israel's negligence of detainees"

           
President Michel Sleiman held a meeting on Wednesday at the Baabda Palace whereby he discussed with caretaker Environment Minister Nazem El Khoury the latest developments in the country, noting that Sleiman also tackled the current security situation with the Lebanese Armed Forces Director of Intelligence Brigadier General Edmond Fadel.         

In this context, Sleiman also received Brigadier General Roger Salem and a board representing the Maronite League, presided by Samir Abi Lama.           

On another note, President Sleiman condemned in the strongest terms the "Israeli negligence of the detainees' condition in Israeli jails", which led to death of Maisara Abu Hamdiyeh on Tuesday after a long battle with cancer.          

In this regard, Sleiman called on the international community to follow up on the condition of the detainees and to impose pressure on Israel in a bid to honor relevant international conventions.         

Palestinian prisoner, Maisara Abu Hamdiyeh, who was serving a life sentence in Israel, died of throat cancer in an Israeli hospital on April 2.            

Abu Hamdiyeh, who was arrested in 2002 began complaining of health related issues over a period of nine months and was diagnosed with cancer of the esophagus. Little is known on whether he had received proper treatment for his case.
