REPORT: Parliamentary sub-committee to hold lengthy meeting on Thursday

                                 
MP Robert Ghanem stressed on Tuesday that the Parliamentary subcommittee will hold an lengthy meeting on Thursday, in light of which the deputies will decide whether or not to continue holding meetings in order to reach a new electoral law.           

For his part, Kataeb party MP Sami Gemayel said that the draft law that will be discussed must guarantee fair representation, pointing out that “today’s meeting was a time waste.”     

Following a session of the parliamentary sub-committee assigned to approve the new electoral law, Gemayel noted that the hybrid law does not offer fair representation to all the Lebanese, stressing that the Kataeb party will not hinder any agreement over this draft law if the majority of the parties support it.             

“We preserve our democratic right to reject it,” he added.           

The Parliamentary sub-committee assigned to approve the new electoral law convened on Tuesday at 11:00 am at the parliament chaired by Deputy Robert Ghanem.                   

Deputies Ali Bazzi, Ali Fayyad, Serge Tersarkissian, Akram Chehayeb, Alain Aoun, Sami Gemayel, Ahmad Fatfat, Agop Bakradonian and George Adwan attended the meeting, the state-run National News Agency reported.             

Lebanon's political parties are sharply divided over the electoral law governing the upcoming parliamentary elections             

The rival parties have failed to agree on a new draft law despite several suggestions made.               

Last week, their failure forced parliament to suspend the candidacies ' deadlines applicable based on the 1960 electoral law to give the parties more time to reach consensus.
