Safadi to LBCI: political problems will emerge should Lebanon fail to fund STL

Finance Minister Mohammad Safadi said that in case Lebanon does not commit to the Special Tribunal for Lebanon (STL) funding, it will face more political problems than economic, adding that this decision will be taken following a cabinet consensus.

Asked by LBCI whether he will assume the cabinet’s presidency if asked so, Safadi, who was participating in the “Lebanese Banks Day” in France, said that he had the same reasons that pushed Najib Mikati to resign. “I will not replace anyone”.

Safadi met with his French counterpart Francois Baroin to discuss the approach of the Lebanese banks to the situation in Syria.

For his part, Baroin told LBCI that his country will continue fulfilling its international commitments towards Lebanon, as approved during “Paris III” conference.
