Grand Mufti presides over first session of HIC

Mufti of the Republic Sheikh Mohammad Rashid Qabbani presided on Saturday over the first session of the Higher Islamic Council in which representatives of Akkar, Sidon, Hasbayya, Marjeoun and Mount Lebanon provinces were elected.

Mufti Qabbani pointed out that he will soon set a date for the elections in the Bekaa and Tripoli, adding that he will designate this month 8 members, in order to fill in the vacant seats of the 32-member council.

Earlier, the deputy head of the Higher Islamic Council Omar Mesqawi called on the council to hold a session, according to the norms and provisions stipulated in the council’s decree-law.

Mesqawi issued a statement whereby he noted that the Mufti of the Republic Sheikh Mohammad Rashid Qabbani did not call for a session to be held on Saturday the 4th of May, calling on the council to hold an urgent meeting at Dar al-Fatwa.
