Parliamentary communications committee ends session, to reconvene Friday at 1:00 pm

Speaker Nabih Berri adjourned the parliamentary communication committee session, and withdrew his new electoral proposal from discussions after the Future bloc rejected it.

The committee is set to reconvene on Friday at 1:00 pm, while the General Authority session is scheduled for Saturday.

The committee had resumed its session at 6 pm to discuss Berri's new proposal, where sources reported that the Future bloc may reject it, while the Loyalty to the Resistance bloc, Change and Reform bloc and the Kataeb may approve on it.

House Speaker Nabih Berri had chaired at 11:00 am the communication committee session assigned to discuss the electoral law at the Parliament in the presence of members. Following the morning session, Speaker Berri held a meeting with a number of the committee’s members including MPs George Adwan, Sami Gemayel and Ali Fayyad.

Speaker Berri distributed a new proposal by which 64 Christian and Muslim deputies will be elected on the basis of a hybrid proportional Orthodox law, while the remaining 64 deputies will be elected on the basis of the majoritarian system with 26 electoral districts.

On the other hand, MP Ali Fayyad stressed that March 8 forces and the Kataeb party are still awaiting responses regarding their remarks presented on the hybrid electoral draft law presented by the Lebanese Forces Party, the Future Bloc and the Progressive Socialist Party.

In this context, MP Alain Aoun stressed that the evening’s session will be decisive regarding Berri’s new proposal, while MP Adwan confirmed that during the next session, they will respond to the remarks presented over the hybrid draft law.

The parliamentary communications committee reconvened in an effort to discuss the hybrid law; a mixture of the proportionality and majoritarian system, after the General Authority session set to vote for the Orthodox Gathering law Wednesday was deferred until Friday due to lack of quorum.
