STL memorandum confirms Israel involvement in Hariri killing

Al-Akhbar daily learned that the former Prosecutor of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) Marwan Dalal submitted a memorandum for the STL Pre-trial Judge Daniel Fransen.

According to the local daily, the memorandum included documented information insinuating the possibility of the involvement of the Israeli “Mossad” and its leader Meir Dagan in the assassination of former PM Rafik Hariri on February 14, 2005. Dalal, an expert in International judicial proceedings, said that the memorandum “reflects the opinion of a friend of the Tribunal”. The memorandum was accompanied by a submission request that guarantees him the possibility to refuse disclosure of any additional evidence. 

Al-Akhbar added that Dalal claims his experience in international law qualifies him to submit an Amicus Curiae. With the intention of helping the STL with its inquiries, Dalal said that the investigations did not take into consideration the possibility of Israeli involvement in plotting and executing the assassination of former PM Hariri. According to the newspaper, Dalal added that this negligence occurred while Israel was shamelessly interfering in Lebanon’s affairs, especially during Ariel Sharon’s tenure.     

According to Al-Akhbar, Dalal divided his memorandum into four parts. The first part was dedicated to an overview and then he moved on to display the Israeli interference in the investigations. Dalal also explained the reasons behind Israel’s interference in Hariri’s assassination and closed with a summary in which he called on judge Fransen to summon witnesses.    

For his part, STL spokesperson Marten Youssef told Al-Akhbar that Pre-trial Judge Daniel Fransen received an official memorandum from a representative of Dalal to confirm Israel’s involvement in the assassination of Rafik Hariri. Al-Akhbar quoted Youssed as saying that Fransen will look into the memorandum without setting a date for it.
