US pushes for new Lebanon-Israel ceasefire plan: Official

A U.S. official said that Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu regarding diplomatic negotiations between Israel and Lebanon.

The official said on Sunday that the United States has proposed, as an initial step, that Hezbollah halt all attacks against Israel, while Israel would refrain from escalating its military operations in Lebanon.

The official added that Aoun sought to move forward with the proposal, but Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri placed responsibility on Israel to refrain from “opening fire first.”
