Arab League chief sees monitors in Syria by end of December
The Arab League chief said on Tuesday monitors could be in Syria before the end of the month on an unprecedented mission to assess whether Damascus is implementing an Arab plan to end a bloody crackdown on protests, after weeks of Syrian stalling.   

Galvanized by a soaring death toll after Syrian turned troops and tanks on protests over President Bashar al-Assad's rule, Arab states have pushed Damascus to let in a team of about 150 monitors to witness what is happening on the ground.   

"I can say with some assurance but not certainty that before the end of next week they (monitors) will all be there," Arab League Secretary-General Nabil Elaraby told Reuters, adding it was the first such mission since the League was set up in 1945.
