Cairo meeting: Al-Arabi to head to Damascus with initiative to solve crisis
At the end of the extraordinary meeting of Arab Foreign Ministers Council held late Saturday in Cairo, Arab foreign ministers called for an end to the bloodshed in Syria before it is too late, stressing the necessity to respect the Syrian people’s right to a safe, decent life, and to legitimate political and social reform aspirations.

According to a statement issued at the end of the meeting, the ministers urged the League of Arab States’ Secretary General Nabil al-Arabi to head to Damascus to convey to Syrian leadership the Arab initiative aiming to solve the crisis.

On Libya, the Arab ministers called on the U.N. Security Council and the wider international community to periodically unfreeze Libya’s assets. They also called on the United Nations to give Libya's seat the world body to the National Transition Council, effectively recognising the rebel body as the legitimate authority in Libya.

“Previous experiences have proven that the use of violence to crush revolutions, uprisings and protests claiming drastic changes in the Arab world is useless”, al-Arabi had said at a previous ministerial meeting.

Syrian foreign minister Walid al-Muallem did not attend the meeting; he was replaced by Syria's Permanent Representative at the Arab League Ambassador Youssef Ahmad.
