A bloody August in Iraq

239 Iraqis were killed and 399 wounded in sporadic acts of violence that swept through Iraq last August.

Statistics prepared by Iraqi Ministries of Defense, Interior and Health indicate that 239 Iraqis including 155 civilians, 39 soldiers and 45 policemen were killed. Of the nearly 400 wounded in August, 183 were civilians, 120 policemen, and the remaining injured came from the military ranks. Statistics also show that 56 terrorists were killed and 115 were arrested during the same month.

U.S. forces are scheduled to leave by December 31 under a bilateral security agreement. Iraqi politicians are discussing the possibility of having some U.S. forces stay as trainers beyond the end of the year.
