Over 7 million voters head to polling stations in Tunisia

For the first time in Tunisia’s history, Tunisians will vote on Sunday in historic elections in which Islamists are expected to get the best result. The elections take place 9 months after the popular uprising that toppled the regime of Zine El Abidine Ben Ali and launched the Arab spring.      

More than 7 million voters were invited to choose 217 members for the Constituent Assembly is set to establish a new constitution for the “second republic” in Tunisia’s history, replacing the 1959 constitution. The Assembly will also be in charge of authorizing the executive authorities during the second transitional period following the elections, until new elections take place under the new constitution.        

The Independent High Electoral Commission is expected to announce the final results on Monday afternoon.
