Historic elections in Tunisia amid tight security measures

Polling stations in Tunisia opened their doors Sunday morning, paving the way for Tunisians to vote for the first time in Tunisia’s history, amid expectations of big wins for Islamists. The elections take place 9 months after the popular uprising that toppled the regime of Zine El Abidine Ben Ali and launched the Arab spring.            

More than 7 million voters were invited to choose 217 members for the Constituent Assembly set to establish a new constitution for the “second republic”, replacing the 1959 constitution. The Assembly will also be in charge of authorizing the executive authorities during the second transitional period following the elections, until new elections take place under the new constitution.     

More than 40,000 members of the army and security forces were deployed to guarantee the security of the elections that are being monitored by 13,000 foreign and local observers.
