Buthaina Shaaban: Violence will not lead to democracy

Syrian tanks pounded an old district in Homs on Saturday in one of the heaviest barrages since the military intensified an assault on the central city two weeks ago to crush protests and a nascent insurgency, residents said.

Several army deserters took refuge in the district of Bab Amro the day before, adding to hundreds who had already defected, they said. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said initial reports indicated that one person was killed and at least five injured in the attack.

According to the Syrian News Agency (SANA), the Syrian Authorities arrested in Homs last week several wanted groups for carrying out terrorist attacks against the Syrian Armed Forces.

The army confiscated a large number of weapons used by armed groups such automatic rifles, night vision goggles and hand grenades made in Israel. The Syrian Opposition posted on its website pictures and videos of residential areas in Homs shelled by army tanks in Bab Amro, Bab Sbaa and Deir Baalba amid a complete absence of any social or economic activities in the city.

Meanwhile, the political and media adviser Bouthaina Shaaban to the Syrian President Bashar Assad told the “Independent” that the Syrian Army is subject to continuous terrorist attacks and that the current situation in Homs is “horrible”, pointing out that she couldn’t visit her mother’s tomb in the area because of the armed groups military activities.

Shaaban told the reports that there is no way that violence could lead to democracy.
