Pope Francis gave a message of hope to his "brothers and sisters" in Iraq ahead of his historic, risky trip to the country from March 5-8.

Francis, who is due to start the four-day whirlwind trip in Baghdad on Friday (March 5), said he was coming as a pilgrim "to implore forgiveness and reconciliation from the Lord after years of war and terrorism".

Iraq's minority Christian community has been devastated by wars and repression by Islamic State insurgents. During the trip, Francis will visit the former Islamic State stronghold of Mosul, where churches still bear the signs of conflict.

Francis will also visit Ur, birthplace of the prophet Abraham, who is revered by Christians, Muslims and Jews, and meet Iraq's top Shi'ite Muslim cleric, Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani.

"Let us not allow the terrible suffering you have experienced, which grieves me so much, to prevail," he said.
