Chile detains a Portuguese, wanted by Interpol, in connection with Beirut port explosion
Police in Chile announced on Wednesday that they had arrested a Portuguese national, wanted by Interpol, in connection with the 2020 Beirut port explosion that killed more than 200 people.
The man, whose name was not revealed, arrived in Santiago on a plane from Spain, before being taken back on another plane to Madrid, according to the police statement.
In this regard, Airport Police Official Christian Saez said that the arrested man is wanted for allegedly having brought “explosive materials” into Lebanon with links to the August 2020 explosion.
He added that in coordination with Interpol, the man was prevented from entering Chile and later put on a plane back to Spain.
The massive port explosion on August 04, 2020, which was due to storage of large quantities of ammonium nitrate without precaution measurements, killed 214 people at least while more than 6500 were injured, and devastated entire neighborhoods of the capital.
