US calls for a transparent investigation into killing of Al Jazeera reporter

The United States has called on Wednesday for a "transparent" investigation into the killing of American-Palestinian journalist Shireen Abou Aqleh while covering an Israeli army operation in Jenin in the occupied West Bank.

"This should be looked at in a transparent way. We encourage the two sides to participate in this investigation so that we can understand why this happened," US Ambassador to the United Nations Linda Thomas Greenfield told reporters.

In turn, the US State Department called for an "immediate and thorough" investigation, demanding that those responsible for the journalist's killing be held accountable, according to spokesman Ned Price.
