Death toll climbs to 45 in Cuba hotel blast

The death toll from the accidental gas leak that destroyed the luxury Saratoga hotel in Havana has risen to 45, the Cuban authorities said, after the body of the last missing victim was found Thursday in the ruins of the hotel.

The 42-hour national mourning begins at dawn today and ends at midnight on Saturday.

The death toll reached 45, including four children, a pregnant woman and a 29-year-old Spanish tourist.

According to the Ministry of Health, the accidental explosion also injured 54 people, including 16 who were still in hospital on Thursday, including four minors.

The hotel was undergoing renovation in preparation for its opening on May 10, two years after it was closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
