Drone strike in Shomera exposes rising risks in Israel-Lebanon confrontation: The details

Report by Amal Shehadeh, English adaptation by Mariella Succar

A drone launched by Hezbollah crossed into northern Israel and struck a military vehicle in Shomera, injuring 12 soldiers, four of them seriously, according to Israeli reports.

The strike was described as highly precise and marked a significant escalation in cross-border attacks.

Israeli media said a second drone was launched but was intercepted by the Northern Command, while the Israeli military later clarified that what was detected was not a second drone but an interceptor missile that fell in the area after crossing over a school.

The incident has heightened tensions inside Israel. Defense Minister Israel Katz called an emergency consultation meeting to discuss the continued confrontation with Lebanon.

Security officials said the current policy of limited response, reportedly under U.S. pressure, is eroding deterrence and operational readiness, increasing risks for soldiers on the ground.

The strike in Shomera came less than 24 hours after Israel requested an urgent call involving Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and U.S. President Donald Trump, according to Israeli reports.

The call reportedly followed a visit by Israeli military chief Eyal Zamir to southern Lebanon.

During the call, Netanyahu reportedly pushed for a firm deadline—no later than mid-May—for indirect negotiations between Tel Aviv and Beirut.

He also sought U.S. approval to avoid being bound by the ceasefire if rapid developments occur, allowing Israel to carry out strikes beyond the Litani River. Trump, according to the reports, urged the military to continue limited operations.

Analysts say the Shomera attack could reshape the military balance, as Israeli forces intensify efforts to counter explosive drones.

Intelligence reports have indicated that military intelligence had previously warned of such drone capabilities and their risks, but officials say those warnings were not acted upon, leading to what one security official described as a “difficult-to-resolve situation.”
