A senior official in the Japanese Liberal Democratic Party confirmed the death of former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe after he was shot during an election rally on Friday, Japan Broadcasting Corporation and JiJ News Agency reported.

The national broadcaster said that according to a senior official of the Liberal Democratic Party, former Prime Minister Abe died in a hospital in the city of Kashihara, Nara region, where he was receiving treatment at the age of 67.
