IRGC threatens retaliation against Israeli power infrastructure

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said on Monday that Iran would respond to any attack targeting its electricity sector by striking Israeli power plants as well as facilities supplying electricity to U.S. bases in the region.

In a statement carried by state media, the Revolutionary Guard said Iran would retaliate if its energy infrastructure was targeted, warning that any attack on its power network would be met with a similar response.

The statement appeared to walk back earlier threats against desalination plants in the region, which are considered critical for providing drinking water in Gulf countries.

The statement also criticized Donald Trump, saying the U.S. president falsely claimed that the Revolutionary Guard intended to attack desalination plants and harm populations in the region.

Trump had threatened on Saturday to target Iranian energy facilities if Iran did not fully reopen the Strait of Hormuz to all ships within 48 hours.

The Revolutionary Guard said it was determined to respond to any threat with an equivalent level of deterrence, adding: “If you bomb electricity networks, we will bomb electricity networks.”
