REPORT: Patriarch Rai: Any lawyer changing sect of Maronite couple "will be sacked from courts"

Maronite Patriarch Bechara Rai said on Friday that any attorney of law who attempts to change the religion or sect of any couple wishing to get a divorce "will be sacked from the religious courts."

Rai's comments were made following  a meeting with judges of spiritual courts in Bkerke in which he condemned  the change of sect of Maronite couple, adding that such a step is considered a "grave sin."

Among Lebanon's eight different Christian sects, Catholics, including Maronites, are the most numerous. However, their divorce options, are the most limited.

Whereas both the Orthodox and Protestant churches recognize divorce, Catholics and Maronites, strictly prohibit it. Marriages can only be annulled, and only under a restricted set of conditions.

Therefore, Maronite couples opt for another alternative, changing sects.
