REPORT: Tripoli residents block roads to protest alleged offense of senior Muslim figure

Tripoli residents blocked several roads across the northern city on Monday, to protest against the alleged insult of Muslim Caliph Omar Ibn al-Khattab during a sit-in held on Sunday whereby protesters rejected the release of terrorism suspect Omar al-Atrash.

Members of the Msheik family staged a sit-in on Sunday in Hadath to express their rejection to the potential release of Omar al-Atrash, and calling for his execution.

The Msheik's had loudly called for "Omar's damnation," but their calls were misinterpreted by residents of Tripoli as a blatant insult of Muslim Caliph Omar Ibn al-Khattab.

The family's protest came in light of the latest terrorism attack in the country when a suicide bomber detonated a bomb in the Choueifat region in early February.

On Monday February 3rd, a suicide bomber blew himself up in a passenger minivan south the Lebanese capital, wounding at least six people, the state news agency said.

The blast, which took place during the evening rush hour in the Choueifat district, appeared to be the latest in a string of attacks in Lebanon linked to the civil war in neighboring Syria.

Hussein Msheikh, the minivan driver was severely wounded in the attack and the family's protest mainly focused on decrying a potential release of prime suspect Omar al-Atrash.

The Lebanese Army Intelligence had arrested Omar al-Atrash Friday January 24, on charges of being involved in recruiting suicide bombers, smuggling rigged cars and explosive belts and planning terrorist attacks. On Sunday 25 January, al-Atrash confessed to bringing car bombs, explosive belts and suicide bombers to Lebanon.
