REPORT: Lebanon's Parliament fails to elect new president in first round of voting
The Lebanese parliament failed on Wednesday to elect a new president in the first round of voting, with the second round scheduled for next Wednesday at 12 noon.

Today's parliament session produced 48 votes in favor of Lebanese Forces leader Geagea, 16 in favor of candidate Henry Helou, 52 blank voting slips, 1 for Kataeb leader Amin Gemayel and 7 annulled votes.

The session to elect a new president kicked off at 12 noon under the chairmanship of Speaker Nabih Berri and in the presence of 124 deputies.

Lawmakers who did not attend Wednesday's parliament session were Future movement leader MP Saad Hariri, Future Bloc MP Okab Sakr, National Struggle Front MP Elie Aoun and Future bloc MP Khaled Daher.

Among the first to arrive were Speaker Nabih Berri, Change and Reform bloc leader MP Michel Aoun, and National Struggle Front leader MP Walid Jumblatt.

Parliament is being summoned to choose a successor to President Michel Sleiman, whose six-year term ends in late May, but deep divisions over the war in neighboring Syria could delay any decision, possibly for several months.

Putting off the choice of president could add to a political vacuum in Lebanon, which is struggling to contain domestic sectarian conflict while also grappling with a flood of Syrian refugees and a sharp slowdown in economic growth.

Lebanon's presidency is reserved for the country's Maronite Christians under a confessional system aimed at sharing representation among its many religious communities.
