REPORT: Public administration contract workers stage sit-in in Beirut
Public administrations and ministerial contract workers staged a sit-in on Wednesday outside the Ministry of Industry in Beirut, calling on the state to endorse the series of ranks and salaries.

"We will not allow anyone to victimize us," Mahmoud Haidar, head of the Public Administration Employees, said during the protest.

Haidar also voiced his rejection to the continuous dejection of the employees' rights evident in the increase of weekly working hours.

Thousands of Lebanese teachers, civil servants, contract workers and others have been on a continuous sit-in, urging the state to grant them their rights.

Last Wednesday, the Union Coordination Committee held a demonstration to exert pressure on Parliament to pass the series of ranks and salaries draft law.

Nonetheless, Lebanese lawmakers failed to endorse the wage scale for lack of agreement over controversial items, and deferred discussions till after May 25, the constitutional deadline to elect a new head of state.

In the event of a power vacuum, the parliament will no longer be able to legislate, further exacerbating the situation.
