Activists from Zahle organized virtual elections on Sunday, in a symbolic movement to express their “rejection to the extension of the Parliament’s mandate and negative expression, while calling for allowing the citizens to practice their democratic right in voting for their representatives.”
The Kataeb party and the Free Patriotic Movement participated in the movement, while the other parties boycotted.
While several officials supported the initiative, some deputies not only rejected it, but also threatened the organizers, leading the latters to change the title of the movement from “Zahle elects,” to an opinion poll concerning the extension of the Parliament’s mandate.
