REPORT: Speaker Berri calls for swift endorsement of food safety law
Speaker Nabih Berri said on Wednesday that the Lebanese state has a strong stance in the case of the abducted troops, adding however that complete secrecy should be adopted in the ongoing negotiations.

The relatives of the 26 Lebanese troops who have been abducted by the al-Nusra Front and the Islamic State militants for almost four months have been threatening to escalate their protest, accusing the government of hypocrisy and manipulation in dealing with the hostages’ file.

Berri's comments were made during his weekly meeting with MPs whereby he expressed irritation over the electoral law discussions.

Last week, a committee tasked with drafting a new electoral law for the parliamentary elections convened in Ain el-Tineh under the chairmanship of House Speaker Nabih Berri.

Following the meeting, Deputy Robert Ghanem stated that the committee was granted a period of one month to draft a new law on the basis of proportionality.

On another note, Berri called for the swift endorsement of the food safety law at the joint parliamentary committees.

On Tuesday, the joint parliamentary committees decided to form a sub-committee tasked with drafting, within a period of 15 days, a law pertaining to food safety based upon 2 proposals presented by Future Bloc MP Atef Majdalani and former Prime Minister Najib Mikati.

Following a meeting for the joint committees, Health Minister Wael Abou Faour vowed to continue with his campaign targeting corrupt institutions, noting that the health ministry will resort to the judiciary regarding food safety cases.
