REPORT: Saudi envoy to LBCI: Lebanon’s presidential election is purely an internal Lebanese affair
Saudi ambassador to Lebanon Ali Awad Assiri said on Tuesday that Saudi Arabia considers that the election of a new president in Lebanon is a priority, adding that the presidential election is purely an internal Lebanese affair.

Assiri told LBCI that the Christians of Lebanon need to be united, adding that inter-Christian relations must be restored.

He also voiced hopes that the Lebanese Christian leaders would reach a common ground over one consensual presidential candidate.

Assiri’s comments were made during a banquet held by the Qatari ambassador to Lebanon Ali Bin Hamad Al-Marri for the ambassadors of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries to Lebanon.

As for the dialogue scheduled to take place between Hezbollah and the Future Movement, Assiri noted that Saudi Arabia encourages any step that prevents sedition and unites the Lebanese people.

The presidential seat has been vacant since President Michel Sleiman's mandate ended on May 25.

Political differences led to a lack of quorum during 16 electoral sessions in parliament.
