REPORT: Naameh residents say won’t tolerate further extension of landfill’s term
Naameh residents blocked on Saturday the road at the entrance of their town’s renowned landfill, calling on the cabinet to backtrack on its decision to extend its term.      
 
“We will hold a sit-in every 15 days to make it clear that we will not accept any further extension of the landfill’s term,” the residents said, reiterating their call on Environment Minister Mohammad Mashnouq to step down.      
 
On January 17, angry residents cut off the entrance to the controversial Naameh landfill and called on the government to shut it down, warning of escalatory movements.       
 
A spokesperson for the demonstrators also urged Environment Minister Mashnouq to resign after failing to shut down the landfill.         
 
The Naameh landfill was originally set for closure on the 17th of January but under a new cabinet plan, the deadline has been extended for a three-month period and could be pushed back by another three if no alternative was found.
