REPORT: Minister of Health Abou Faour says Ministry’s inspectors found contaminated spices

Minister of Health Wael Abou Faour held on Tuesday a press conference in which he said that his food safety campaign has expanded to include tests on spices, which showed to be highly-contaminated.

“Some spices have poisonous and cancer causing materials, including aflatoxines,” he added.

The ministry's inspectors “will begin taking samples from the spices coming from abroad. We will also check them at mills,” Abou Faour stated.

He said he informed the governors to close violating institutions and dispose of the contaminated spices after listing their names.

The minister also announced that tap water at schools did not meet health standards.

Asked about the food poising case in the northern city of Tripoli, Abou Faour said it was caused by kaak and cheese.

Last Saturday, at least 10 people suffered food poisoning after eating cheese-filled pastries at the Abi Samra Vocational School.

Abou Faour launched a campaign in October against restaurants, supermarkets and suppliers accused of breaching health and safety standards.
