The Lebanese waste crisis is not the first one of its kind in the world, as reports indicate that the Italian city of Naples once suffered from its own waste management crisis from 2008 until 2011.
The issue started in the 80s, mainly due corruption and local mismanagement, and then worsened in the 90s when the Italian mafia took over waste management and started making money by illegally dumping industrial waste in the regions’ landfills.
