Activists of “al-Naameh landfill closure campaign" staged a sit-in on Thursday at the facility’s entrance in Ain Drafill against the government’s decision to temporarily reopen it.
The municipality of al-Naameh rejected the reopening of the landfill, stressing that the residents can no longer bear the trash of other regions.
Earlier today, Aramoun residents gathered in Aramoun square to denounce the cabinet’s above mentioned decision, describing it as unfair.
They also warned Sukleen truck drivers not to enter the said landfill.
The cabinet approved on Wednesday a waste management plan proposed by Agriculture Minister Akram Shehayyeb during a cabinet session unattended by Foreign Minister Gebran Bassil and State Minister for Parliament Affairs Mohammed Fneish.
The plan states the reopening of the Naameh landfill for seven days in order to dump the garbage accumulated in random sites in Beirut and Mount Lebanon after the original closure of the Naameh landfill on July 17.
