David Schenker to LBCI: We cannot help the government of Lebanon if it doesn’t help itself
US Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs David Schenker reiterated that the United States does not provide "assistance to the government directly because we do not want it to fall into the hands of Hezbollah or for Hezbollah in any way to benefit, a specific terrorist organization."

Speaking to LBCI about sanctions, he said: "These packages are reviewed by lawyers throughout the US government and because of that level or rigor of these packages is viewed as highly credible around the world."

"But the downside of that is it takes a long time to produce and sometimes needs external advisers," he added.

He stressed that the United States desperately wants to help the people in Lebanon. He said: "We do that every day through humanitarian assistance."

He added: "We also want to help the Lebanese government, but we cannot help the Lebanese government if it does not help itself."
