REPORT: US drama “Homeland” sued for misdepicting Lebanon

In the second episode of US drama series “Homeland” - season 2, entitled “Beirut is back”, the director wanted to convince viewers that the events took place in Lebanon at a time when filming was actually taking place in Haifa, Israel.     

With their costumes and turbans, actors looked more like Taliban fighters than Hezbollah members and the episode portrayed the Lebanese capital as a hotbed of terrorists.

This multiple award-winning TV series damages the image of Lebanon, and the fact that it was filmed in the cosmopolitan Street of Hamra is a double insult. 

Speaking to EXECUTIVE Magazine, Lebanese Tourism Minister Fady Abboud has promised to take legal action over the “lies” in the show.    

“This kind of film damages the image of Lebanon; it is not portraying reality,” he said. “We want to take action, we want to write to the filmmakers and producers and demand an apology. And we are planning to raise a lawsuit against the director and the producer.”      

Abboud stressed that he was looking into possible legal routes the government could take, but added that he would be willing to take action personally if necessary.
