Roumieh Prison has 4,000 languishing inmates… It was built with a capacity of roughly 1,050 inmates, but the number has expanded over the years making social distancing impossible.

The increase of overcrowding was and continues to be one of the key reasons why a health disaster could occur with the spread of COVID-19 inside Roumieh prison, especially since many inmates suffer from weak immunity as a result of poor living conditions and health.

The Interior Minister Bassam Mawlawi paid a visit to the prison and spoke with some of the inmates, listening to their demands.
