REPORT: The impact of the “50% for 50 days” touristic offer on Lebanon

The “50% for 50 days” touristic offer will last from January till the end of February under the sponsorship of the Ministry of Tourism, Middle East Airlines and other concerned parties. The offer includes airline tickets, taxes, 3-days bed and breakfast accommodation in a 3 star hotel starting from $350 per person and $450 at a 5-star hotel.

At this stage, Minister of Tourism Fadi Abboud said he cannot talk about the preliminary figures of this offer, but he pointed out that it started to bear fruit.

The Ministry refused to describe this offer as a “campaign”, calling on the Prime Minister to convene the Supreme Commission for Tourism established by former PM Rafik Hariri to guarantee the success of this offer. The Ministry is trying to find an alternative for tourists coming from the Gulf waiting for the dark cloud to pass. However, the ministry is holding officials responsible for their negligence towards Gulf countries.

In this regard, Minister of Tourism Fadi Abboud said that restaurants and commercial markets are witnessing a substantial growth. He told LBCI that the “50% for 50 days” offer is the responsibility of 10 ministries who have not held meetings yet to draw a comprehensive plan.

Abboud considered that dialogue with Gulf countries is almost nonexistent at a time when there should be an exchange of all security and non-security matters in order for Gulf residents to assess whether the threat of abduction in Beirut is more dangerous than that of abduction in Latin American and Africa.

On one hand, hotel owners have announced that regardless of this offer, they had decreased their prices and they are waiting for the advertising campaign in order to change the status quo.
