Lebanon's front on edge: US and EU proposals 'crumble' in face of Israeli priorities

The escalation of military confrontations in the south between the resistance and Israeli occupation forces over the past two days indicates that the "deal" of the US envoy Amos Hochstein with Israel to cool the southern front has fallen before it could materialize.

This article is originally published in, translated from Lebanese newspaper Al-Joumhouria.

Otherwise, he would have visited Beirut carrying acceptable solutions, and with it, fell the "deals" brought by the foreign ministers of Britain and France because they revolve around one axis and achieve one goal, which is to ensure Israel's security.

In the meantime, after the failure of political efforts and the diplomatic shuttle policy pursued by the US administration first, and then the core EU countries, including France, Britain, Germany, Belgium, Spain, and others, excluding the efforts of the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, observers expect an Israeli military escalation in the south in the coming period.

This is especially true after the negotiations to exchange captives between Israel and Hamas faltered.

To achieve a goal, which lies in what Israeli Prime Minister and Defense Minister described as "complete victory" in Gaza, and the continuation of fighting on the northern and southern fronts, even if the Gaza war stops, the Israeli army has mobilized more than three combat brigades at the south front.

The sources indicate that the reasons for the failure of the US and European proposals have become known, as multiple official Lebanese and Israeli sources and various Western and Israeli media sources have published them.

In essence, they prioritize the security and interests of Israel at the expense of Lebanon and its security.

The sources also suggest that there seems to be no ready answer yet from all parties regarding the nature of the upcoming phase.
