Press Digest for Sunday February 02, 2014

The following are summaries of today's major stories published in the Arabic press. LBCI does not edit press digest articles for content, giving English-language readers insight into the various views expressed in newspapers across the Arab world.

Caretaker Interior Minister Marwan Charbel stressed that Lebanon is currently witnessing a dire security situation, noting that the security apparatuses are undertaking measures in coordination with a number of figures threatened with assassination, including caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati.

He refused however to name other figures who are also threatened, adding that all those who deal with public affairs in Lebanon are threatened with assassination.

"Security measures are also implemented on the national level in a bid to protect the citizens", Charbel told Acharq al-Awsat newspaper on Sunday.

In this regard, he voiced his concern over the growing threat on the Lebanese scene due to sectarian divisions.

Security sources in Sidon revealed on Sunday that the Lebanese Army Intelligence has managed to arrest Abdel Koddous Chmandar, a supporter of Ahmad al-Assir and a relative of former singer Fadel Shaker.

The same sources told Al-Mustaqbal daily that Chmandar was seen while leaving the city of Sidon, noting that he was arrested in the region of al-Rmayleh.
