A military source told Al-Mustaqbal newspaper on Monday that a ceremony will be held today to celebrate the Lebanese Armed Forces’ receipt of 30 tanks and 12 cannons from Jordan.
The LAF had received this military grant a few weeks ago but was unable to celebrate back then as a senior Jordanian officer – set to attend today’s ceremony – apologized for not being able to travel to Lebanon.
This comes after Muath al-Kasaesbeh, a Jordanian pilot who was captured by the Islamic State, was burned alive by the militant group.
Lebanese Forces chief Samir Geagea told Al-Akhbar daily on Monday that dialogue between his party and the Free Patriotic Movement has failed to yield an understanding over the presidential file.
“Most of the Christians in particular and the Lebanese in general are concerned about the presidential issue and the means to end the current power vacuum, but most importantly, they seek a real agreement between the LF and the FPM,” Geagea said.
Turning to the government's work mechanism, Geagea called for addressing the main problem which is the election of a new president, instead of devising a work mechanism to deal with the power vacuum.
Prime Minister Tammam Salam told As-Safir newspaper on Monday that he will continue to hold contacts with the Lebanese political forces in order to decide on the potential amendment of the cabinet’s work mechanism.
PM Salam refused to comment on the latest positions and meetings, including the detailed ministerial meeting that was held at the residence of former President Michel Sleiman.
However, well-informed sources told the daily that Salam is upset by some reactions to the proposal of amending the cabinet's work mechanism.
Well-informed sources told As-Safir newspaper on Monday that they have received security reports warning of possible assassination attempts against Future bloc deputies.
“The attacks aim to undermine dialogue between Hezbollah and the Future Movement, thus causing sectarian strife,” the sources said.
“Reports also claim that a group of 4 to 5 members, affiliated with the Khorasan extremist group, is plotting an attack on Speaker Nabih Berri,” the same sources concluded.
