Borell: Solving the current self-made crisis is responsibility of Lebanese leaders
EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell regretted on Friday the continued political stalemate in Lebanon, as well as the lack of progress in the implementation of urgent reforms, “after being notified of the decision taken by Prime Minister-designate Saad Hariri to step down on the task of forming a government."

“It has been almost a year since there was no fully empowered government in Lebanon, which led to an unprecedented financial and economic crisis that the Lebanese people are still facing its tragic consequence,” Borell said in a statement.

He also stressed that it is the responsibility of the Lebanese leaders to solve “the current self-made crisis,” adding that unity and responsibility are needed in order to meet the country's multiple challenges and the legitimate aspirations of the Lebanese people.

The European Union also called on all Lebanese political forces to support the urgent formation of the government.

“Parliamentary consultations should begin for this purpose without delay,” he added.

On another note, Borell stressed that the parliamentary elections must be held on their due time in 2022.

“An agreement with the International Monetary Fund remains necessary to save the country from its financial collapse, considering that Lebanon's stability and prosperity are essential to the region as a whole and to Europe,” he added.

Borell concluded by reiterating the EU’s strong and continuous support to Lebanon and its people and to its stability, security, territorial integrity, sovereignty and political independence.
