Hariri steps down as Prime Minister-designate-[REPORT]
Prime Minister-designate Saad Hariri said on Thursday that he has given up on the task of forming a new cabinet.

Hariri’s comments were made from the Baabda Presidential Palace after meeting with President Michel Aoun.

“We had deliberations over the government, and President Aoun asked during our talk for some amendments which I consider them as fundamental in the cabinet formation,” Hariri added.

"It is clear we will not be able to agree with his Excellency the president," Hariri concluded by saying.

Hariri was named to form a new government last October, after the resignation of Prime Minister Hassan Diab following the Beirut port explosion. Diab continues now to serve in a caretaker capacity.

Lebanon is in the throes of an economic crisis that the World Bank has described as one of the most severe in modern history.

Its currency plunged and lost more than 90% of its value in less than two years, leading to poverty and fuel and medicine shortages.
