Rifaat al-Assad: If Bashar steps down I am willing to take over
Syrian President Bashar Assad’s uncle Rifaat al-Assad called for the establishment of an Arab-International alliance in charge of negotiating with his nephew.

Rifaat suggested that the talks should seek a deal that will allow Assad to step down from power in return for guarantees for him and his relatives. Rifaat al-Assad, who has been living in exile since 1984, proposed that himself or any other member of his family can take the reins of power.

“Arab countries must guarantee the security of Bashar Assad so that he would step down and hand over power to a well-off person who will be able to ensure the continuity of Bashar’s company after his resignation”, Rifaat said.

Rifaat al-Assad is the younger brother of late Syrian President Hafez al-Assad. He was vice president and considered a successor before he attempted to stage a coup. Following its failure, he moved to live in exile between Paris and London in 1984.
