REPORT: Appointment of Luxor's new governor stirs anger among residents

In June 2013, Egypt's President Mohammed Morsi appointed Adel El-Khayat as the new governor of Luxor.

El-Khayat is a member of the Building and Development Party, the political arm of al-Jamaa al-Islamiyya.

His appointment triggered anger among Luxor's residents in light of that massacre took place on the 17th of November 1997, killing 62 people, mostly tourists.

The attack is believed to have been carried out by exiled leaders of Al-Jamaa al-Islamiyya.
